One Week One Goal: Google Revelation

January 18th, 2007 at 09:34 pm

I received an inspiring comment on my blog yesterday. Nothing particularly special about that, as I have grown accustomed to reading the kind, insightful, and inspiring words you leave me on a daily basis.

With that said, this comment was different. It was on an entry from

October 16th: over three months ago (!) from someone new to the site. He wasn't on the site due to an interest in personal finance, he found my blog due to a Google search for one goal one week. I WAS THE NUMBER ONE RESULT.

Actually, his exact words were "Googled it - and you are the first link. So there. So I've decided to hold myself accountable and live-by 1-goal.1-wk." I didn't believe him, so I tried Gooling the phrase. Searched one goal one week without quotations, and there are "about 45,700,000" results.

And there I am. At the top.

My eyes bulged, my jaw dropped, my little heart went pitter-pat. There are companies and websites that would kill for that kind of placement. OK, maybe not kill, but definitely spend good money... And somehow I manage to get there by accident?

Odd. Weird. Perhaps even kizmit.

This one comment, from a man in India using the handle
Text is Condor and Link is http://www.flickr.com/photos/condor/
Condor, has left me with an itch I desparately want to scratch. It brought to light the known but unacknowledged fact that what I put forth on this blog (perhaps spew forth would be more accurate!) could really and truly have an effect on some unknown person somewhere out in 'The Real World', be it positive or negative. Was it the intended effect? No, but I guess that's part of the revelation, too. People will take what they will from your writing, which may or may not be what you expect.

Long story short, this has made me realize several different things. Most basically, I stopped my "One Week, One Goal" entries when the holidays hit and I really should start again, if nothing else but for my own good. Also, it made me wonder whether or not "One Week, One Goal" could be the basis for a viable online community. And whether I could create it. Or maintain it. Or, with enough luck and enough Condors, grow it into a self-sustaining entity.

So many what-if's, so little time...

By 10p Tuesday 11/14 I will...

Finish last week's goal of organizing the pantry! Also, I will create a viable schedule for reining in the household chores.

The Result:
The pantry is close enough! I'm fighting a losing battle with this, b/c DH like sto put things back any old place he reaches first, so I'm pretty much shifting stuff around on a daily basis. I'm going to mull this over to find a better system for the future, but for now I call it done!

As for the cleaning schedule, I went back to
Text is the site and Link is http://www.gardenandhearth.com/House-Cleaning/cleaning_schedule.htm
the site that gave me my original jumping off point for my old house. I like the theory of it, and while I would love for my home to be spotless it's pretty much just me cleaning up after an adult (me), a child in a grown man's body (DH), and 3 cats. ACK! I never thought I'd say this, but I almost wish I had kids I could give chores too!! I'm including my new schedule below. For those that are curious, I made my 'busy' days the days DH usually spend at home together as I'm hoping he'll ask me why I don't sit down and relax a little bit. Cheesy I know, but I've about run out of options! Thursday's are his pool night, and I've decided to take that as my 'me' night, and therefore there will be no extra cleaning going on.

I actually have a schedule, but it was set-up for the rental house we used to live in. 900 sqft vs 1700. 1 story vs 2. 1 bathroom vs 2. No stairs, half the windows, yadda yadda yadda... I feel like I'm drowning!

At any rate, I'm tired of playing catchup so to speak, so I'm going to sit down and figure out what has to get done for my particular comfort level. And no, I'm not too worried about DH's comfort level: he's fine as long as there's a path from the door to his chair...

One day I might get brave and post pictures of that chair, but I'm afraid the blog police might fine me for posting something so unpleasant!

bah! I got the fridge and freezer done (it was interesting, I'll give it that), but the pantry fell by the wayside. See, I had bought a bunch of meat on sale and had to package it up and get it in the freezer, which added to my freezer organization task.

Turns out my freezer is full almost to the bursting point: I even have a shelf that is trying to sag and break! Moral of the story: can't buy any more meat on sale until we whittle away the 7 species we currently have on ice!

By 10p Tuesday 11/7 I will...

Clean out and organize my fridge, freezer, and pantry.

I know I've got leftovers in that fridge somewhere, my frugie sense is tingling all over! I've got a mostly full pantry, and completely full freezer, but nothing has a designated home.

Well, obviously the freezer stuff has to stay in the freezer, duh!

What I mean to say is freezer leftovers are mixed around with bags of veggies, potatoes, biscuits, and at least 7 species of meat. Hard to maneuver in there. The pantry and fridge are no better, so I've got a week to work on it.

Frugal Failing when it comes to food.

The Result:
goal set, goal met (and ahead of schedule!): i made not 3 but 4 meals that generated enough left-overs to freeze:

* chili (2 servings stashed)
* chicken stock (3 quarts remaining)
* spaghetti sauce (2 quarts remaining)
* dirty rice (4 quart size freezer bags each half full)

best of all, i used the chicken stock to make the dirty rice.

The Reward:

I will splurge today and buy myself lunch out while running errands. It'll be a taco from Barbaritos ($2.99) plus a small cheese dip ($0.75) before tax. The tacos are huge and easily count as full meal: chicken and black beans and fresh pico de gallo and guacamole. I ask for it in soft corn torillas b/c I don't like the crunchy ones and they give you more filling this way! *grin*

I have a loyalty card from this place, too, and I'm 7 $2.99 tacos away froma free $6.50 burrito. WooHoo!

** UPDATE ** my reward cost $4.04 after tax, and the nice lady double-punched my card. now i'm only 5 tacos away!

One Week, One Goal: Rules Update

October 23rd, 2006 at 12:45 pm

I've decided to sweeten the pot for myself in my One Week, One Goal quest. Yes, I've read the threads on 'rewards' and 'treats' and all, but I figured a carrot dangling in front of me couldn't hurt!

So, if I meet my goal in less than a week, I get to buy myself a treat out of the

Change and Buck Bucket.

Please note the 'less than a week' clause: if I put my goal off until the very last minute but still finish on time, it doesn't count. BAH, procrastination, TAKE THAT!

Since I finished 1W1G #1 on Sunday, I bought myself a cup of coffee and a pumpkin spice doughnut from Krispy Kreme. Yuuuuuuuuuuuuuuummmmm! Cost a whopping $2.55!

The Result:
Woohoo! Got a 30 gallon trash bag full of clothes, plus filled 2 boxes with stuff that's been waiting to be donated. I put it all right by the door so it would be in the way until I took it out of the house, and today it's in Goodwill's hot little hands.

One Week, One Goal

October 17th, 2006 at 02:50 am

I've decided to hold myself accountable by posting my goals here, online, where no one knows who I am or where I live and no one can contact me. Perfect!

Another board I was on (which was such a let-down, BTW), had a group that focused on one goal a week. Something small, reasonable, and if possible, attainable. Giving how my weeks seem to be flying by at this point, I figured I could definitely give this a try.

That was about 2 and a half weeks ago =/

Now that I have found my blog away from home, I've decided to bring the idea here.

One Week (any 7 day time period will do)
One Goal (may or may not be of a frugal bent).
