It's Alive!!!

February 27th, 2007 at 05:30 am

OK, all, my website version 0.1 is up and live. ACK!!! Everything looks OK so far in IE7 and Firefox, I'll just have to double-check IE6 tomorrow. Since I don't know anyone running locally running IE5, I can't test it.

So, here it is folks:

Text is http://www.focusontheupstate.com/ and Link is

The everything is up and running (sort of). For those that are curious, this is running on PHP and CSS (two technologies I haven't gotten to work with much before, so I took it as a learning opportunity). It looks all nice and simple, which is what I want, but believe me there's a hairy mess of code underneath there. Bluh!

Issues that I know about thus far:

* the 'comment' and 'request for quote' forms both have a verification code system to prevent spam (yay!). sometimes it doesn't show up the first time the page loads, which i think i might have just fixed but i don't know for sure. lemme know what happens!

* internet explorer can bite my big toe! everything looks proper in Firefox, which is a compliant browser. unfortunately, i've been spending countless hours trying to make things legible in IE, which apparently doesn't like proper code. what does all this mean? i fully expect someone somewhere to be running a version of IE that chokes on my page. lemme know what happens!

Things I intend to work on but just can't muster the will to do so right now:

* more photos (although this will be the nicest part of the job!)

* a better naming system for the photos

* ability to comment on a specific photo or gallery

* a 'credits' page for all the Open Source that's running in the background. although i've hacked it up ALOT, neither the mail engine nor the gallery were my original work

* more specifics on business offerings

* possibly a 2 layer drop down menu for the nav bar, but the bones are already there for that. i just don't have one now b/c there's not enough content to warrant it.

So, there it is for all the world to see. I'm going to go sleep now!!!

Congratulations! I love the look of it. My browser or something won't let me browse throught the photos, but I've seen your work here so I know they are awesome!

I'm running IE7 and it says error on page and won't fully load anything other than the home page and clicking on any of the links in the gallery tells me page not found. So yes, I think it chokes on IE. But what I could see was pretty and nicely laid out.

    thanks for your input, everyone!!!

i found the error that made the gallery junky and it was silly: when i was testing the site i had everything online but not at the actual main page of the site. when i updated that to be accesible, there was a setting i didn't change in the gallery to follow that change, so it didn't know how to find the pictures. DOH!

currently i am running in IE7, IE 6 and firefox. anyone running a different browser care to tell me if you can make it through unscathed?

    Looks very nice.

Looks very much like the format my ex-wife's boyfriend has his website image gallery set up with the family camera, which he has taken apart but I never got a dime back for.

Bet you didn't expect that response, eh? Yes, I'm a tad bit bitter, but at you. Smile

BA, i'm going to go out on a limb and assume you meant "but NOT at you" Big Grin
i agree with the underlying point that the gallery (and possibly the site as a whole) might be a touch too generic. i've been wrangling so many spatial layout issues that i just put the 'flair' on the back burner...

Looks LOVERLY!! Can't wait to see and hear more of your successes!

Question - When you direct people to the other events locations online are you concerned that they may not come back to your page? What would happen if they opened in a pop-up?

Twere me, I'd offer my photos in the lineup first before the events, but hey that's just me...I'd want them to get to the meat first and then touch on the gravy.

Is there such a thing as an events feed? so that you don't have to keep that portion/page physically updated yourself?

Congrats on getting it started! WOOOO--HAAAAAAAA!! How are the contacts with realtors going? ...or were you waiting to get the site up first?

looks great- as someone who lives outside the USA i am a little confused as to where "the upstate" is- so maybe just a little bit of info on location etc for your international vistors
btw- runs fine on my firefox

lux: i agree with the outside site issue and should change those links to open new windows. i'm hoping to find something of a calendar i can auto update, maybe RSS feed, bla bla blah! interesting point about putting the gallerty before the events... my thought was that the events page would start out being just 1 page (especially if i get the links to pop to a new window) whereas the gallery would be who knows how big.

and yes, i was waiting to get the site up to get serious with the realtor contacts. the gallery has a way for me to publish an album of images but not have it show on the main page, so i can take a series of photos for Susie Q. Realtor and post them online, then direct her to the specific album without it being publicly available...

lieweheksie, you bring up a very good point that i need to include some more specific information about location and such. while the focus of the site is very regional, i'm hoping to offer design services and maybe photo merchandise to anyone who'll buy it down the road which could (hopefully!) wind up being an international proposition. not to mention the fact that we have such a large international contingency here to begin with... thanks!

such great feedback! ya'll are the best! except for BA, who's bitter at me Wink Big Grin

it loaded fine for me on IE... may i say that the photo of the green snake is soo vivid and so cool... i gotta show my DH as he loves that kind of stuff... and i really liked your picture of the river from the bridge too... it brought a nice feeling of peacefulness for me. =)

i knew they would be great...
