Weather, Website, and Want Some Help!

February 22nd, 2007 at 09:05 pm

Yes, these are 'blurbies' (like my compromise between quickies and blurbs?)

Weather
OMG it's 74 right now and I'm going nuts!!!! Last place I want to be is at work. Interestingly, it's going to be in the low 30s/high 20s tonight. Nothing like a 40-50 degree temperature shift to get the blood going.

Website
Bah!!! Here's my problem. OK, I'll be honest, I have multiple problems... I have a general idea for the site, but I can't decide if I want to go 'artsy' or 'businessy'. And I have a really nifty PHP driven Open Source image gallery that works on it's own perfectly, but isn't quite embedding into my pages the way I want. And finally, since this is something all my own and I can do it however I want, I'm creating text files that get marked up by PHP and then stich it all together with CSS for design and layout. This is cool because, when I want to change how everything looks, it'll take a few minutes tops. This is not cool, because right now I'm banging my head against a wall trying to make everything layout properly in both IE and Firefox. Forget the other browsers, I just want these two to work! I'm having to slide in some unfortunate hacks to get IE to cooperate...

And Finally: I Want Some Help!
I have been cordially invited to write some articles for SavingAdvice on computers, technology, and saving money. I'm flabbergasted, not to mention honored! Here's where I need help: what kind of articles would ya'll like to see? Are there any questions you'd like to see addressed, resources you've not been able to find, etc? I want to make sure these articles are worthwhile for Jeffrey, so any and all suggestions are more than welcome. Please, Help ME! Big Grin

lol... sounds like you are enjoying the weather... you know, you could always move to hawaii and keep me company.. hehe... it's (almost) always perfect weather here... and you're already used to HCOL.... =)

i hope you get the website reconciled soon... i know we've been waiting to see the pictures...

as for a technology article... gee... i honestly don't know... how about something that involves making your computer last a little longer, typical maintenance some people don't even bother to do...
or how about how to figure out what technology you need (not getting fooled by the bells and whistles if you can't figure out how to use them)
or how about online safety and security measures.
i really don't know as i am not much of a tech person... =D

I blogged earlier needing help on how to post my pictures. I have done it before in the past, but this last time, I put in the img command and I find what I want to load then I put in the closing img command and all I get when I open the blog is a little red x. Whats up? How do I get pictures on my blog? The photo is in jpg. Thanx!

    Some things I've wondered about:

What everyday things will shorten the life of your computer. I know the dust from cat litter killed one of my computers and was wondering what other hazards I might be missing

How to properly maintain a computer on the cheap. Should I be cleaning it? should I run certain programs to save the hard drive?

What are the ways that you can lower the costs associated with having a computer?

When does it make sense to upgrade to a new computer?

what are the important things to know when buying a new computer (and how can you save)

If your parents only need the computer for email, what is the best computer to get and service provider.

I hope I didn't ask too many questions...

I think a good article would be how to keep the power consumption down low.

Electronics are beginning to suck a lot of power, and that's even when it's not in use!

Personally, I think a lot about that, and have gone as far as planning out my next computer to be a lower-power, near-silent PC with very low power consumption. Either that or perhaps a UMPC-like device that would use much power to begin with. The Nokia N800 looks really drool-worthy in that respect....

How to use computer to save money.

We pay bills online. This saves on stamps.
We track investments online (Try managing 2 401ks, 2 Roth IRAs online and 2 rollovers online... it's nice to have websites/software which link them together).
There are free gaming websites (my favorate is freearcade.com) instead of buying kids more expensive gaming systems.

Talk about various software products (Windows XP, Windows Vista, Office, quicken, MS Money, Turbo Tax) and how much each costs. Weigh pros and cons to suggest what has value.

Talk about buying a new computer and how much each costs, with pros/cons. For example, I know that the first computer a person buys needs a very good monitor. Because I am about to buy my third PC in 12 years, but I am still using the same monitor (I bought a good one the first time- good move for me).

In addition, it usually pays to upgrade the memory when you buy a computer to keep it from going obsolete as quickly. For example my first PC was a P133 with 64 MB RAM. At that time most of my fraternity brothers has P100s or P66's with 16 MB RAM. My 64 to them was overkill. 2 years later that same PC was doing me fine and they all had to upgrade to keep up with game and software requirements.

I met my wife 2 years later, she bought a NEW P200 with 8 MB RAM and we could not run all my software on her PC. Memory adds value.

I have looked into Windows Vista and specced the processors and memory... it's clear to me windows keeps increasing it's memory footprint and it's in a consumer's best interest to invest in more memory.

Price out equivalent computers at Dell, Circuit City, Best Buy and HP. Suggest where the value is.

To add to what is above, free things on internet.

    Free games
    Free software
Free internet radio (I like Pandora's box). Saves relative to Ipods and other related technology.

Discounted online brokerages (Sharebuilder vs E-trade vs Solomon, Smith Barney for example). Compare costs and advantages.
    Online banking

Hey Tina!! Congratulations on the website and the article... Smile

Don't have much suggestion or the articles. Although I am working on getting my computer upgraded: new MB/CPU, better and bigger RAM and new graphic card. Anyway, I'd like to see something like upgrade for all budgets, low/mid/high-end. That might help me make a decision. Then again, this might just be helping me...
