Coolest Thing I've Found In AGES!!!

March 13th, 2007 at 03:50 pm

When you get a chance, please check out the article I wrote on

Text is The Robinhood Fund and Link is http://www.pfadvice.com/2007/03/13/the-robinhood-fund/
The Robinhood Fund over at Jeffrey's PFAdvice site. It may or may not make it to the forums, so as always I'm giving a heads up here.

This site is without a doubt one of the most interesting, unique, and even inspiring concepts I've seen on the web in the 15 years I've been online.

Read the article, visit the site, and keep the address in the back of your mind the next time you or someone you know runs into a difficult time.

It's not clear who is funding the so-called rewards. It's not a registered charity. Where's the money coming from?

you're right, it isn't a charity. from what i can tell, the company started with a fair amount of seed money which is funding some of the earlier wishes. it is a project of a company called CambrianHouse.com which works under a 'crowdsourcing' model...

the site is intended to be ad-driven (same model as saving advice) which is what generates the income in to the site. the possibility of having a wish granted is what drives consistent traffic to the site, thereby resulting in consistent income through the ad revenue. self-perpetuating, so to speak...

If it's not a charity, how do they make money?

It looks like anyone can donate funds to anyone's wish. I'm going to have to come up with a good one. New clothes, since I've lost almost 20 pounds and can't fit into my old ones...or maybe something for kids, husband or my mom! Oh...is there a limit on wishes? I hope not.

Oh, and I've always wanted to donate a bunch of books and bicycles to people who need them.

    Cool site...thanks for sharing!!

well, the theory is that they'll make money from ads and from sponsored 'wish challenges' such as the current snowboard challenge. from what i can tell, the site is currently running off of seed money to create a member base (pretty common in the internet world).

while it's true you can donate to wishes, you can vote for a wish to win without donating to it, and a wish can win without having received any donations from members. if a wish doesn't win, the wisher still gets any donations that were made to that wish.

boy, the word wish is starting to sound really weird to me now... Big Grin
there is a place where good samaratins can donate to the fund, but this is also optional.

Tina - Thank you so much for posting about this site! I was able to pass it on to a forum acquaintance from Delphi - Liesl - and she has now put up her wish for a stem cell transplant. I am so glad that I was able to pass it on to her, and I think I saw that you had commented on her wish. Smile
