Headline: Deer Causes Budget Hemorrhages!

October 19th, 2006 at 09:32 pm

I've been blindsided by deer!!!

There I was, happily cruising along in my budget software, enjoying the sights of all this month's bills being paid and it's not even the 20th, when I come to a screeching halt at the sight of my balance.

What? I'm $400 down? ACK!!! OMG, WHAT HAPPENED?!?!?!??

I start careening about, grasping for my check book and clutching my mouse like a suicide strap, repeating the mantra "There HAS to be an explaination SOMEWHERE!!!" I pass some familiar looking debt payments, and remember I had overpaid 3 that I didn't intend to. OK, but where's the REST?

I turn the corner in my software, and there it is, standing right in the middle of my register.

Hunting Season.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhh!

DH's visions of deer from the very beginning of the month leapt out of nowhere and smashed a big hole in the side of my budget before I had even made a budget.

"I'll get you, Hunting Season! You just wait and SEE!!!" Trashing my budget like that...

Irony of it all is I don't particularly like venison, not to mention I could have bought 93% lean ground angus at $0.99 per pound and filled way more freezers than Hunting Season will.

Grrrrrrrrrrr.

Hunting season is big here in this part of the state. Hubby doesn't hunt and used to take weekend duty for all the hunters for all the different types of seasons. Then in trade, he'd get the holiday weekends off. Worked out great for us! There was always a hunter with a good weekend to trade.

Well - that sucks that it wreaked havoc on your budget - but let us remember that he was entertained and feels mo' manly right about now! Big Grin

Just remember to go ahead and budget some money for it for next year - putting in a little bit each month towards next year's trip. While you are at it budget in a girly trip for yourself for next year as well. You both deserve some entertainment IF you can save for it!

I happen to like venison, but I grew up eating it. That can make a difference.

My DH took our trailer back up today. I am not one to eat hunted food...so it doesnt bother me that DHs 'hunting' = a campfire, a good story ot two and a beer.

Hunting season for me = down time to enjoy a nice cozy fire at home.

But it is a budget buster here too.

i don't mind hunted meat, but venison is a bit dry for my taste. DH's dad makes a venison sausage that makes great spaghetti sauce, but for the price of hunting supplies i could have bought 200 lbs of ground beef on sale, more than we'll ever get if DH gets a dear this season =/

but he is going back out this saturday a.m., so maybe i should just think of this cash outlay as pre-paid tina-time!

    Hahaha, great post.

The entry fee to cheap meat a la venison is very steep indeed. Very. Most people don't go into hunting for the meat of course, but it's a nice side benefit. The only good thing I can say is that, once you past the initial hump, the meat does get very cheap indeed.

But, I guess it also doesn't help if you don't care much for venison. I've had venison before, I agree that it can be rather gamey. However, I have been told before that it depends on how the meat is prepared and then cooked.

None of that helps though, does it? I mean, from the financial point of view that you're in. For what it's worth, I can certainly sympathize.

BA, that's the saddest part of all: this isn't our entry fee into the world of hunting, this is just (part?!) of what feels like yearly membership dues! DH has been hunting since he was 6 or so, but ever since I've known him there's always something that isn't right or needs replacing or upgrading or refitting or whatever starting the end of September. And I don't know that he's got a deer ever since I've known him =/ You'd think he could walk around the woods in old camo and roll around in deer pee for free every year and still not catch a deer, wouldn't you?

    Ouch.

I guess he's mostly into the "experience" of hunting and the toys that comes with it more than anything?

Because I half-way decent hunter will know how to bag a deer no problem. It doesn't even cost much, but it does take time and preparation....

Well, I'm sorry for you, Tina. I don't know what to say, except that most guys are like that. It's no comfort, I know....
